Sequence Fab Stem, “The Hook”

this was a very interesting project both from the perspective of machinist and from the perspective of bmx rider. when aaron called to discuss the possibility of producing this stem i was skeptical from a riders standpoint, and intrigued from the machinist angle. of the techniques for producing this we considered making the three pieces separately but settled on making the main body out of one piece of solid 6061 and cutting it apart as the last operation. we really felt like this method would allow us to hold the tolerances between handlebar and steer tube to a consistent minimum. which is very important to the function of the stem as a clamping device.
it’s always refreshing to see a challenging project come to light and even more refreshing to see new ideas challenge the standards.
this is a great design that i’ve been happy to be a part of developing. you can see more at the sequence fab website.

these are in mid-process shown before and after of the handlebar slot.

this is the stem receiving the final slot ready to be split into the 2 halves.

sequence3

this is the final step, cutting the stem apart into the two halves. from here they get ran through a tumbler to deburr the edges and clean up any scratches they might have.

here is the final product 2 “hooks”, 2 bolts and the spacer. this is a photo of the 50mm version with pocketing in the center piece.

NEAT. I would like to see the maker’s initials, the name of the product, or logo etched on the middle wedge. Once this stem goes into production, where can I buy it?

wow. I never even thought about those steps. haha
it works great. tight as it gets, and lighter than anything else.

do you think the 50mm version will be capabel to handle street riding’s abuse?

    jon,

you’ll need to work that out with aaron. we don’t keep any sort of stock and the sale would have to go through him anyway. maybe enough suggestions would lead him to getting a few “raw” versions next time around.

    thanks –phil

i don’t think it’s easy to strip out the bolts? i suppose if you had your heart set on stripping them out you could.
for what it’s worth most of the stems that we make we use what’s called a “form tap” on the threads. which helps create a stronger thread profile than regular cut threads. at least that is what they tell me…
